The Best Day Trips from Antigua Guatemala

July 20258 min read

Lake Atitlán, Chichicastenango market, Pacaya volcano, and more. Antigua is the perfect base for exploring Guatemala — here are the day trips worth your time.

One of Antigua Guatemala's greatest strengths as a travel base is its location. Sitting at the heart of a volcanic highland region two hours from Guatemala City, Antigua puts some of the country's most spectacular destinations within a single day's reach. Whether you have a few hours or a full day to spare, the options are extraordinary.

Lake Atitlán: The Unmissable Classic

Aldous Huxley famously called Lake Atitlán the most beautiful lake in the world. Three volcanoes rise from its southern shores; a dozen indigenous Mayan villages dot its edges, each with its own distinct culture, language, and textile traditions. From Antigua, it takes roughly two hours to reach Panajachel (the main lakeside town) by shuttle, and from there, public lancha boats connect to the surrounding villages.

For a day trip, aim for San Juan la Laguna (renowned for its coffee cooperatives, natural dye artisans, and tranquil atmosphere) or San Pedro la Laguna (more lively, with excellent food and views). If you have two days, spend the night. Lake Atitlán rewards lingering.

Chichicastenango Market: Thursday & Sunday

The Chichicastenango Indigenous market is one of the largest traditional markets in Central America and one of Guatemala's most extraordinary cultural events. Twice a week — Thursday and Sunday — thousands of vendors from across the highlands descend on the town to sell textiles, ceramics, fresh produce, live animals, incense, and handmade goods of every conceivable variety. The colours, sounds, and smells are overwhelming in the best possible way.

The Iglesia de Santo Tomás (the main church) is itself unmissable — one of the few Catholic churches in Guatemala where you will witness Mayan shamanic rituals being performed openly on the church steps, with incense burners, candles, and petitions to both Catholic saints and Mayan deities. Plan for a full day. Arrive early to beat both the crowds and the heat.

Pacaya Volcano: Hike an Active Volcano

Pacaya is one of Guatemala's most active volcanoes and one of the most accessible volcanic hikes in Central America. Located about an hour from Antigua, the main trail ascends roughly 2.5 hours to the summit, where on clear days (and clear nights — night hikes are popular) you can stand metres from flowing lava fields and feel the ground radiate heat beneath your feet. The views of the Guatemalan highlands from the summit are spectacular.

Go with a licensed guide (required by the national park). Wear long trousers and boots — volcanic rock is sharp. Start early to avoid afternoon cloud cover and carry more water than you think you need. The hike is moderate difficulty and suitable for most reasonably fit travellers.

Zunil & San Simón: The Folk Saint of Guatemala

The small market town of Zunil, about an hour from Antigua, is home to one of Guatemala's most extraordinary cultural sites: the shrine of San Simón (also known as Maximón), the syncretic folk saint who accepts offerings of rum, cigars, and prayers for impossible requests. The visit combines a stunning highland market town, the spectacle of active religious ceremonies, and one of the most genuinely strange and moving cultural experiences in the country.

Coffee Fincas: The Story Behind the Cup

The Antigua coffee appellation is one of the most celebrated in the world, and several exceptional coffee fincas (farms) in the surrounding highlands offer guided tours that walk you through the entire production process — from cherry-picking in the fields to wet-milling, drying, sorting, and roasting. Finca Filadelfia is probably the most visitor-friendly, with well-organised tours and a beautiful setting. For a more intimate experience, ask a local guide to introduce you to one of the smaller family operations.

Guatemala City: A Half-Day for the Curious

Two hours by shuttle, Guatemala City is not everyone's priority — but the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology (Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología) is genuinely world-class, housing one of the finest collections of pre-Columbian Mayan artefacts anywhere in the Americas. The Zona Viva (Zone 10) neighbourhood offers excellent restaurants and coffee shops for the afternoon. Best visited on a day with flexible transport.

Planning Your Day Trips from Antigua

Most day trips from Antigua are accessible by shuttle (book through any hostel or travel agency in town) or by chicken bus from the main terminal. For more remote destinations or special-access experiences, hiring a private guide with their own transport gives you significantly more flexibility and depth. The key rule: start early. Guatemala's roads are slow, the sights reward time, and afternoon clouds can obscure the views at higher elevations.
